In Takamatsu City, enjoy teppanyaki and pork dishes at Butaman Takamatsu kita

On the first day of our 10-day, 9-night self-driving trip around Shikoku, Japan, we took a flight and bus to get there. After checking in at Toyoko Inn Takamatsu Hyogo-cho in the evening, we were ready to have dinner. Besides grabbing McDonald’s for lunch, we had an in-flight meal on China Airlines in the afternoon, and soon it was evening. Since it was our first time in Takamatsu, Shikoku, we wanted to find a good restaurant for dinner. We strolled around the streets of Hyogo-cho in Takamatsu, looking for a place to eat.

The entrance and sign of Butaman Takamatsu kita

We spotted a restaurant on the second floor called Butaman Takamatsu kita, specializing in pork dishes. A large sign below showed a variety of dishes, including kakuni tofu and pork teppanyaki, which looked delicious, so we decided to give it a try.

The staff served us iced water and handed us the menu. There were so many choices that we weren’t sure what to order, so we went ahead and ordered…

  • Large rice x 2
  • Fried dumplings for 2
  • Kakuni tofu
  • Double-layer pork teppanyaki
  • Karubi (meat between the pork ribs)
  • Tonteki (pork steak with sauce)
  • Garibara (grilled pork)

Before long, a plate of shredded cabbage was served, which we hadn’t ordered. The server explained that it was a complimentary item, which was a pleasant surprise.

They first served one of the restaurant’s specialties, the kakuni tofu. The flavor was amazing and tasted even better with rice, and our family quickly finished it all.

Next, they set a portable gas stove on the table and started cooking the pork teppanyaki. Once the pork was ready, we could dive in.

We also had fried dumplings and various pork dishes. Since we initially ordered just one bowl of rice, we added another after seeing so many delicious pork dishes (like the karubi, saucy pork steak, and grilled pork) that went perfectly with rice. It was the best way to enjoy the meal.

After filling up, it felt special to enjoy our first dinner of 2024 here in Shikoku. Now, let’s look forward to the next 9 days of our journey!
