On the third night of our road trip, we had dinner at Beef Cutlet Restaurant koushuya

After finishing our daytime itinerary for the third day of our Hakone and Kawaguchiko road trip, we stayed at Toyoko Inn Fuji Kawaguchiko Ohashi . For dinner, we went to Beef Cutlet Restaurant koushuya (牛かつ専門店 甲州家) near Kawaguchiko Station.

After checking in and dropping off our luggage, we walked there—it took about 15 minutes on foot, since the hotel’s shuttle bus to Kawaguchiko Station had just departed. It was actually quite pleasant to stroll along the way, admiring the buildings and scenery around Lake Kawaguchi. When we arrived at Koshuyake, several people were already waiting outside because all the seats inside were full. Luckily, we only waited about 10 minutes before getting a table.

Our family of three was seated by the window, with a nice view of the green trees outside. Soon after, the staff brought over a lava stone grill made from Mount Fuji’s lava, placed above a small burner similar to an alcohol lamp. They lit it to preheat the lava plate.

The gyukatsu (fried beef cutlet) set meal was then served. One piece of beef cutlet was placed upright to show its current doneness—about medium rare (30%)—and the staff explained that we could grill it further on the hot lava stone to our preferred doneness. The dipping sauces included soy sauce with wasabi, lemon salt koji soy sauce, and Japanese-style sauce. Rice refills were free, and the set came with shredded cabbage and miso soup.

Before grilling, the staff lightly brushed pork fat on the lava plate to prevent the beef from sticking or drying out. The beef used was Koshu Beef, a premium brand of black Wagyu from Yamanashi Prefecture. The crispy fried beef, grilled to perfection and dipped in sauce, paired wonderfully with the hot white rice—absolutely delicious.

After dinner, it was already dark. We took a few photos of the Koshuyake storefront from the side and then walked back to Kawaguchiko Station to catch the Toyoko Inn Fuji Kawaguchiko Ohashi Hotel shuttle bus back for a good night’s rest.
