Biei in Hokkaido has several popular sightseeing spots. Besides Farm Tomita, Shikisai no Oka, and the Shirogane Blue Pond, Shirahige Falls is also a place that attracts many visitors. Although its location is relatively secluded, it is actually very easy to reach by car. From the Shirogane Blue Pond parking lot, it only took our family about 4 minutes to drive to Shirahige Falls.

The nearby parking lot is not very large, but since visiting the waterfall usually takes less than 30 minutes, parking spaces tend to free up quickly. After getting out of the car, simply walk across the road to Shirogane Bridge, where you can enjoy the view of the waterfall.

The water of Shirahige Falls flows out from cracks in the rocks. It originates from a volcanic river, and the water appears light blue in color—something you don’t often see. After looking it up later, I learned that the water contains a small amount of aluminum silicate, which gives it this beautiful hue.

From the bridge, you can also see another bridge spanning the river in the distance. Nearby, water from other tributaries flows into the river as well, and the entire area is filled with clear, pale blue water.

Looking at the Biei River from the other side of the bridge, the stream is also light blue. In addition to the fresh air, watching the blue waterfall and stream here is very soothing. Summer is truly a wonderful season to visit Hokkaido.
