Mine Topia Besshi: A Hidden Gem in Shikoku
Mine Topia Besshi, located in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, is one of the top three copper mines in Japan and has been transformed into a unique theme park. As a lesser-known destination among foreign tourists, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Besshi Copper Mine.
After enjoying breakfast at our hotel, the Hotel Kazurabashi in Shin-Iya Onsen, our family drove about 1.5 hours to Mine Topia Besshi.
Parking and First Impressions
The parking lot at the park is spacious but lacks shaded areas. Since it was almost noon, we chose a spot farther from the main building under the trees to keep the car cool during the summer heat.
Walking toward the main entrance, we noticed several mini train carriages nearby, likely intended as rest spots or photo opportunities for visitors. However, since it was midday and hot, most people were inside the main building shopping for local produce and specialties.
The main building is quite large. After entering, we found out that the mini train boarding area is on the second floor. Fortunately, it wasn’t too crowded during our visit, making the experience more relaxing.
Riding the Mini Train
When it was time for the mini train to depart, we boarded at Fortune Station inside the main building. Our family initially sat in the first carriage behind the engine, but the height of the carriage was a bit low, making it slightly cramped for adults. On the return trip, we switched to a larger carriage further back for more comfort.
▲The mini train ride was delightful. It passed through tunnels, crossed bridges, and continued toward Fortune Station.
Fortune Station and the Mining Experience
The mini train ride took only about 5 minutes to reach Fortune Station, where we found many old mining tools and equipment from the late Showa era. These included excavation machines, electric motors, and other tools, all exceptionally well-preserved and perfect for photography enthusiasts.
▲After exploring the station and taking pictures
We visited the “Endo Exit Tunnel,” a tourist attraction with interactive exhibits and activities, before taking the train back to the main building.
▲On the return journey, the mini train crossed a striking red iron bridge, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.
