Take the Otaru Canal Cruise to explore the historic streetscape along the Otaru Canal

While we were still in Taiwan, we made an online reservation for the boarding time of the Otaru Canal cruise. After spending the afternoon strolling along Sakaimachi Street in Otaru, we headed to the boarding area. We arrived about 25 minutes early. Inside the ticket center, in addition to ticket sales, there were also many souvenirs and products for sale.

Walk to the Otaru Canal cruise boarding area

The ticket office for the Otaru Canal cruise is located near Central Bridge, which is very noticeable and easy to find. A boat was already waiting by the canal—it was the one we were about to board.

The equipment for the Otaru Canal cruise — you need to wear a life jacket before boarding

After checking in, we lined up and waited for departure. As the scheduled time approached, we put on belt-type life jackets one by one and then began boarding.

The boat set off toward Otaru Port

The boat first headed toward Otaru Port. I didn’t expect the canal to be so long. Along the way, we saw many boats, and later the cruise turned right toward the harbor.

During the Otaru Canal cruise, we saw the Former Shibusawa Warehouse and the Hokkai Seikan No. 3 Warehouse

During the cruise, we passed by the former Shibusawa Warehouse and the Hokkai Seikan No. 3 Warehouse. After completing the loop, the area beneath the bridges we passed through was also very beautiful and clean.

↑ When the cruise boat passes under Ryugu Bridge, be careful not to bump your head. Since this area is close to the harbor, everyone gets excited because they can almost reach up and touch the bridge.

During the Otaru Canal cruise, we admired the nostalgic red-brick warehouse district

After passing under Central Bridge, the boat continued toward the most famous warehouse district—this is the most picturesque spot that visitors love to photograph. This time, we captured the view from the boat. After reaching the end of the route, we returned to the original boarding area and disembarked.

Otaru Canal at night

After 7:10 p.m., we went for dinner. When we came back, the lights had already been turned on. To our surprise, Otaru Canal looked even more beautiful at night than during the day.

The beautiful Otaru Canal at night

With the warehouses illuminated and their reflections shimmering on the water, the nighttime scenery was truly stunning. We had previously visited Otaru Canal during the daytime, but this time we stayed overnight in Otaru, making it a rare opportunity to see such a beautiful night view.
