On the 3rd day of our Hakone–Kawaguchiko self-drive trip, our second stop was Shiraito Falls and Otodome Falls in Shizuoka Prefecture. After leaving the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Center, we continued driving to visit these waterfalls, which are a must-see for tourists. Since the spot is so popular, the closest parking lot to the entrance charges a higher fee (official Shiraito Falls sightseeing parking, 500 yen). We hesitated for a moment, then noticed a parking lot farther away where someone was waving a flag—200 yen per entry. Driving a bit further, we found another one charging only 150 yen per entry. We chose the 150 yen lot, not really because of the price, but because it offered shade from trees so our car wouldn’t be exposed to the scorching sun. It turned out to be the right decision.
The 150 yen lot actually wasn’t far at all, and there are several paths leading to Shiraito Falls. Before heading to the waterfall, we first visited Obinmizu, a small spring about 20 meters down the slope. The water was crystal-clear, and many visitors had tossed coins into it, almost like a wishing well.
Following the signs downhill, we reached Shiraito Falls. Many tourists were there taking photos, with a noticeable number of Western visitors. The falls cascade down beautifully from between dense trees.
The waterfall on the left has a stronger flow, while the right side stretches about 150 meters, where thin streams fall gracefully like white threads—hence the name “Shiraito” (white threads). A railing prevents visitors from getting too close, so you can only admire it from a distance. The water comes mainly from Mt. Fuji’s snowmelt filtering into underground springs, making this part of Mt. Fuji’s foothills a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.

After visiting Shiraito Falls, we continued to nearby Otodome Falls. A short walk along a path, across a bridge, and then uphill led us to the site.
At the top, we were greeted by the powerful Otodome Falls. The roaring sound of the massive cascade was striking, and a deep plunge pool lay beneath it. Unfortunately, you cannot get very close to the falls.

Below Otodome Falls is a check dam, showing just how abundant the water volume is. On our way back toward the parking lot and shops, we spotted a pond by the roadside that looked like a “sky mirror,” reflecting the clouds beautifully. We wondered if, on a clear day, it might even reflect Mt. Fuji.😊。
