Below the main building of Brown Castle Café in Toucheng, there is a scenic spot called “Looking Towards Turtle Island (Guishan Island).” It was previously marked on Google Maps, but the marker has since been removed. We came here to watch the passing trains from above, as the railway runs below. This elevated viewpoint not only offers beautiful views of Turtle Island but also a sweeping panorama of Toucheng in Yilan.
When we visited more than a decade ago, there were fewer buildings in Toucheng, and now, high-rises even line the area around Wushi Harbor. Despite today’s rainy weather, the scenery is still beautiful, with stunning views of Wai’ao Beach and Turtle Island.
We parked at the spot with the white railing, which has space for about 2–3 cars. Below, there is a yellow building, which is the Wai’ao branch of Café No. 9 near Wai’ao Beach.
On weekends, Wai’ao Beach is often busy with surfers, but today, with the rain, it’s quieter. It’s also early April, the start of spring, so fewer people are out surfing. On a clear day, the view of Turtle Island would be even more striking.
From here, you can see the Lanyang Museum, Wushi Harbor, and Wai’ao Beach, where two cars have driven onto the sand. A visitor has even set up two lounge chairs to enjoy the coastline — what a fantastic spot!
From this hillside viewpoint, you can gaze down not only at Turtle Island but also at the passing trains below. Right now, a Taiwan Railways EMU 3000 train is going by — train enthusiasts, don’t miss this spot!
