After seeing the world’s largest Naruto Whirlpools in Tokushima Prefecture, Shikoku, it was already past 3:00 PM. We planned to stay the night at Hotel Route-Inn in Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku. On the way, we made a stop at Chichibugahama Beach in Kagawa Prefecture, Mitoyo City, one of Japan’s Top 100 Sunset Spots. This serene beach is renowned as a must-visit “Sky Mirror” of the Seto Inland Sea. The drive from Tokushima took about 1.5 hours, and my family took a nap during the journey.
Surprisingly, there were quite a few cars in the parking lot, but luckily, we found a spot. The parking was free. After parking, we switched to beach sandals and walked to the shore, which was very close. From afar, the view was breathtakingly beautiful.
As we approached the shore, we noticed many tidal pools filled with shallow water. These pools were teeming with life; tiny hermit crabs were moving about. It had been ages since we had seen such rich marine biodiversity. Observing this tranquil beach washed away many of our worries.。
A local tourism volunteer with his camera was helping visitors take photos in the tidal pools. He kindly took a family photo for us using our phone. Afterward, many visitors, including us, took “Sky Mirror” shots in the pools, some posing with umbrellas or striking dramatic poses.
We took plenty of photos and then rested for a bit, marveling at the diverse marine creatures. There were hermit crabs of various species, some with striped or conical shells, which would retract into their shells when startled. They looked adorable.
After spending about an hour enjoying the sea, we started feeling hungry. We headed back toward the parking lot. Turning back for a final glance at Chichibugahama Beach, it was truly stunning. Near the parking lot, there were several water taps where we could wash our feet. After waiting in line and cleaning up, we got into the car.
By then, the parking lot had become even busier. This is typical during summer when the heat makes late afternoons a more popular time to visit. Once we were all set, we drove off to have dinner.
