In summer, enjoy the colorful flower fields at Shikisai no Oka in Hokkaido

In summer, when visiting Hokkaido, two must-see places in Biei are Farm Tomita and Shikisai no Oka. The beautiful flowers in full bloom look just like a giant canvas painted across the land. We drove from Farm Tomita to Shikisai no Oka, parked the car in the paid parking lot next to the site, and then walked to the entrance of Shikisai no Oka.

Right next to the paid parking lot, there is already an area planted with lavender. We walked straight through the main gate of Shikisai no Oka. When we entered, there was no admission fee. During the peak flower season from July to September, when the flowers are in full bloom, an entrance fee is charged. Our family visited in June, so admission was free.

Shikisai Norokko Tractor Bus

The first thing we saw after entering was the sightseeing tractor train. Many elderly visitors and children choose to ride it because the park is very large, and quite a few tourists take it. Our family did not ride it; instead, we slowly strolled along the walking paths. Nearby, there is the “Silver Bell,” which can be heard from far away when rung.

At Shikisai no Oka, there are two large straw bale characters—Roll-kun (ロール君) and Roll-chan (ロールちゃん). They look like a male and a female. In the past, there was only one, but now it has a companion.

During this season, in addition to purple lavender, there are also chrysanthemums, newly planted green kochia, and many other plants layered one after another, creating a natural canvas-like landscape.

Various varieties of chrysanthemums and petunias in yellow, orange, red, and white are planted in orderly rows down the hillside, neatly arranged in long, regular stripes.

Besides the dreamy purple lavender, there are flower fields of Iceland poppies—rarely seen in Taiwan—which look especially beautiful. With colors such as orange, yellow, white, and red, they stand out vividly among the vast sea of flowers.
