Take the Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat to explore the canyon’s breathtaking rock formations and emerald-green waters

After enjoying breakfast at HOTEL ROUTE-INN SHIKOKU CHUO in central Shikoku, we set out for Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat in Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture. This attraction offers a chance to marvel at the emerald-green waters and stunning rock formations of Oboke and Koboke, two of Japan’s top three hidden scenic spots. The drive to the parking lot took about 50 minutes. Though the roads were narrow, we were impressed by the small local cars maneuvering into their dedicated parking spaces with such ease.

Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat Parking and Ticket Office

The sightseeing boat area has a free parking lot conveniently located next to the building. After parking, we headed to the ticket counter to purchase our tickets. Next to the counter was a table where we filled out some personal information. Once completed, we prepared to head downstairs for the boat ride.

On the next floor, we stopped by the restroom since there are no facilities onboard. Afterward, we continued walking towards the canyon and soon caught sight of the beautiful green stream flowing nearby.

The Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat is about to depart

By the time we boarded, the boat was nearly full of passengers. Next to each seat, there was a long belt that served as a life jacket. In an emergency, it would automatically inflate in the water. All we had to do was buckle it around our waists.

The Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat travels downstream

The boat left the shore slowly, heading downstream along the Oboke Gorge. Magnificent rock formations came into view one after another, creating a stunning visual spectacle.

At Oboke Gorge, you can see the calm water reflecting the surrounding scenery

As we approached the downstream section, the water became calm, creating a mirror-like surface. Trees, rocks, and mountains from the land seemed to reflect perfectly in the water, forming a breathtaking scene. The clear blue sky also appeared mirrored in the river below.

The black kites and cormorants of Oboke Gorge

The boat then began its return journey upstream to the boarding point. As we passed through the gorge, we spotted some of the local wildlife. A black bird perched on a rock turned out to be a cormorant, which we captured using a zoom lens. Occasionally, black kites soared through the sky, circling the valley, but they were too fast to photograph clearly.

The gorge was truly awe-inspiring. The surrounding rocks varied in size and shape, with some submerged in the water, exuding a sense of solidity. As another sightseeing boat approached from the opposite direction, it was mesmerizing to see it framed by the towering canyon walls and unique rock formations—a masterpiece of nature.

Returned to the boarding area of the Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat

Back at the starting point, we reflected on how spectacular the experience was. The Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat ride allowed us to appreciate not only the beauty of nature but also the diversity of species protected in this area. It was a vivid reminder of the wonders of God’s creation.

The Oboke Gorge sightseeing boat's collaboration with universities in Taiwan

Upon returning to the ticket hall, we noticed a group of tourists arriving by tour bus. A young guide led them downstairs for the boat ride, explaining everything in Mandarin. It turned out they were a group from Taiwan, and the guide, a Japanese major from Tunghai University, was assisting Taiwanese tourists as part of a collaborative project. This program involved partnerships between Japanese destinations and several Taiwanese universities, including Kao Yuan University, Providence University, Tunghai University, Hsiuping University of Science and Technology, and National Taipei University.

This gorge is a nationally protected natural site and a must-visit destination!
